Top Floor: Room 3 - The Great Hall

The room contains the effigies of Nana Opoku Ware  ll, Asantehene from 1970-1999 and of the present Queen, Nana Afua Kobi Serwaa Ampem ll, whom he installed Asantehemaa in 1977. 
There are four big show cases in the room.Items in the show cases include the following:

SHOW CASE NO 1.

Specimen of guns used by the ancient Kings to defend and extend Asante Nation. Notable among them are the following:

 

1. Doku – specimen of the gun used by Opemsuo Osei Tutu 1 (1695-1719)

2. Sikantoa – specimen of the the gun used by Nana Opoku Ware 1 (1720-1750)

 

3. Gyahyetoa – The specimen of the gun used by Nana Osei Kwadwo Oko-awia (1764-1777)

 

4. Sisire Kwabrafo- The specimen of the gun used by Nana Osei Kwame Asibe Bonsu (1800-1824).

 

SHOW CASE NO 2: It contains the following:-

(a) Golden and Silver smoking pipes used by the Kings

(b) The Golden Axe which stood for peace. The axe was used to invite warring parties to the King for amicable resolution. The axe was extensively used by King Kwaku Dua 1. His conflict resolution earned him the title “The peaceful King in Asante” by the Europeans of his day.
SHOW CASE NO 3

It contains “fotoo – Leather money bags which contains the King’s gold and silver. The bags for the King. The case also contain scales and weights used by Sanaahene (The King’s Treasurer) for his financial transactions.

The room contains the effigies of Nana Prempeh I , Nana Yaa Akyaa (Asantehemmaa)and Nana Yaa Asantewaa (Edwesohemmaa).

 

A. Nana Prempeh I:-He was the first literate and Christian King of Asante. He learned to read and write and baptized into the Anglican Faith in the Seychelles.


B. Nana Yaa Akyaa (the mother of King Prempeh I) She was exiled with her son to the Seychelles. She died in the Seychelles in 1917. She was the first Queen of Asante to become a Christian.

 

 

 

 

C. Nana Yaa Asantewaa: - Nana Yaa Asantewaa was the Queen of Edweso who led the 1900 Asante war with the British. She was about sixty five years old when she declared the war.

After the war which ended on 3rd December 1900, she was exiled to the Seychelles where she died on 5th October, 1921. 


The first picture is that of Queen Nana Kondu Yiadom, the Queen of Asante from 1917-1944. She succeeded her mother as queen of Asante when Nana Yaa Akyaa passed away in 1917.

Four show cases:

The case contains three of the “Tata” Sword used by the bodyguards of Nana Opoku Ware I.

It contains MANSUO the casket used to store the Kings water when he sat in state in the olden days.

It contains – (a) the cap used by Nana Kwaku Dua 11 the King who reigned for 40 days. (b) The Golden and Silver keys indicating that the keys to the wealth of the Asante Nation lie with the King.

The show case contains the sword embroided with the effigy of Worosa, the chief of Banda state who was killed in an encounter with Asante troops, when Nana Osei Kwadwo Ko-awia was Asantehene.

Other items in the show cases are:-

(A) The cap called “Obi nkaa bi a, Obi nka bi”, “Tit for Tat” The cap has a symbol of two fishes in pool, with head of one at the tail of the other so that if one bites, the other will retaliate to mean that Worosa chief of Banda offended Nana Osei Kwadwo, this was the reason why Nana Osei Kwadwo fought the Banda Nation in 1764. This cap was taken to Britain during the 1874 war. It was Nana Opoku Ware II who brought it back during one of his visits to Britain.

(B) A straw cap used by Nana Osei Kwadwo whenever he celebrated the Odwira Festival. The Odwira Festival was celebrated once a year and it was during the time when the great Asantemam Council met. All the chiefs were expected to attend the meeting to renew their allegiance to the Asantehene, the occupant of the Golden Stool.

(C) The Effigy of Nana Osei Tutu II, the reigning Asantehene was unveiled on 5th December,2000
